A young mother was left with multiple injuries after bravely using her own body to protect her 4-month-old daughter during a violent hailstorm.

Fiona Simpson, 23, was driving home to Kingaroy, Australia, with her infant daughter and her 78-year-old grandmother when the sudden storm struck. Massive hailstones—some as large as tennis balls—pounded the car, shattering the rear window on impact.

Without hesitation, Fiona pulled over, climbed into the back seat, and shielded her baby with her body as the hail continued to rain down.

“It was terrifying, but I didn’t have time to be scared. Everything happened so fast,” she told ABC News.

After the storm passed, Fiona managed to drive her severely damaged car to a nearby home and called for help while waiting for an ambulance. When paramedics arrived, she went into shock, saying her entire body felt numb.

Despite the injuries and the frightening experience, Fiona later said she would not hesitate to do the same thing again to protect her child.
